A Stylish New Addition to Downtown Erie
Nestled on the corner of one of Erie’s busiest intersections, the newly opened A. Francisco’s brings a fresh take on upscale Italian dining. Since the closure of the former 1201 space in 2021, downtown Erie has been missing a sophisticated yet inviting spot—and A. Francisco’s fills that void beautifully. While the food is solid, the real stars of the experience are the ambiance, drink menu, and extensive wine list.
Ambiance & Atmosphere
The space is modern and welcoming, with clean, crisp lines and an open layout. A sleek bar lines one wall, while a mezzanine seating area in the back offers a cozy yet elevated dining experience. The contemporary design gives it a polished yet inviting feel, making it an ideal place for a date night or a gathering with friends.
Wine List & Drinks
The first thing to hit the table was the Italian-exclusive wine list, an intriguing concept that might initially be daunting for some guests. However, the knowledgeable server quickly alleviated any concerns, offering explanations and even bringing out samples to ensure we were happy with our selection. This level of service was a standout touch.
Appetizers & Starters
Our meal started with the burrata bites, which were delightful. These crispy, Panko-crusted cheese balls had a beautifully golden exterior, giving way to a gooey, creamy center. The accompanying sauce was a perfect balance of tangy and robust, with just the right consistency—not overly sweet and thick without being chunky.
We also tried the prosciutto with toasted bread, which was simple but well-executed. The Caesar salad, while fresh, fell a bit short—the house-made croutons lacked crunch, which could be a small detail to tweak as they refine their menu before the grand opening.
The Menu: Pizza-Centric with Limited Variety
The menu leans heavily toward pizza, with only a handful of entrée options. While the focus on pizza is understandable, a bit more variety—perhaps a few more pasta dishes or unique small plates—would be a welcome addition. Dessert options were also minimal, offering just three types of cheesecake.
The Pizza: Well-Made with Room for Refinement
We ordered the mushroom pizza and another version with added pepperoni. Both arrived beautifully plated on large ceramic dishes, which eliminated the need for metal trays or additional serving plates—a nice touch.
The pizza itself was flavorful, with a crust that struck a good balance between crisp and chew. However, the edge crust was a bit thick relative to the rest of the pie. A simple finishing touch, like an olive oil brush or a seasoning blend, could have elevated it. Additionally, while the mushrooms were tasty, they were standard baby bellas—a missed opportunity to incorporate a more diverse mix, such as trumpet, shiitake, porcini, or oyster mushrooms, which would have added more depth.
Additional Considerations
- Dietary Accommodations: They seem open to modifications but don’t currently offer a gluten-free crust, which may be a drawback for some diners.
- Parking: As with any downtown spot, parking is limited, though nearby ground-level lots make it manageable with a short walk.
Final Thoughts
A. Francisco’s is a stylish and much-needed addition to Erie’s dining scene. While their wine selection, ambiance, and service stand out, there are small areas for improvement—such as menu variety and finishing touches on the pizza—that could take the experience from good to great. That said, for those seeking a chic yet approachable Italian spot, this bistro is absolutely worth a visit.
Would I return? Absolutely.
