A Haven For Sushi Lovers

Oba Sushi kicked off our brand-new Readers’ Choice —where you, our readers, decide which spots we check out—and we’re so glad we listened! This new sushi bar truly sets the standard for those who appreciate the freshest ingredients and the most delicate flavors, earning our highest score yet. That said, there’s still room for improvement in a few areas, and we’re excited to see how they evolve!

Ambiance & Atmosphere

The ambiance at Oba is warm, inviting, and effortlessly charming, with decor that enhances the overall dining experience. The space is quite small—around 14 seats total—so it’s not ideal for large groups. However, even when completely full, it maintained a surprisingly quiet and cozy atmosphere, making it the perfect spot for an intimate dinner with friends.

Menu

Nearly every dish on Oba’s two-page menu sounds incredible—so much so that we struggled to decide what to order! Thankfully, our server offered great recommendations for a first visit. As we waited, we couldn’t help but admire the stunning dishes arriving at the table next to us—the Moon Light, Volcano, and Oba Special. When our dining neighbors raved about how good everything was, we knew we were in for a treat… and they were right!

Drinks

Oba’s drink selection is pretty limited—just water, basic teas, canned pop, and lemonade. It’s definitely an area they could improve in the future, but given that they’ve just opened, we didn’t hold it against them in our scoring. Hopefully, they’ll expand their beverage offerings as they settle in!

Appetizers

We kicked off our meal with a comforting bowl of miso soup, a side of edamame, and a standout dish called Hamachi Jalapeño. The miso and edamame were decent, though we wished the soup had been served hotter—because let’s be honest, lukewarm soup just doesn’t hit the spot. But then came the Hamachi Jalapeño, and wow—what a game-changer! Thinly sliced yellowtail, kissed with ponzu, topped with fresh cilantro and just the right kick of jalapeño. It was light yet buttery, impossibly fresh, with a perfect balance of sweetness and heat. A true flavor explosion and easily the highlight of the first taste!

The Sushi

At Oba, taste and presentation come together in perfect harmony. Each dish is a feast for the senses—not just delicious, but beautifully crafted, making every plate as stunning to look at as it is to eat. It’s the kind of place where you find yourself pausing for a moment and admiring the artistry before diving into a bite of pure flavor.

We went with the Deluxe Combo and the Veggie Roll, and from the moment they arrived, it was clear that presentation was just as much a priority as flavor. The Deluxe Combo featured a beautifully arranged California Roll, five pieces of sushi, and an assortment of sashimi—each bite bursting with freshness and expertly balanced flavors. Even after feeling full, I couldn’t help but want more. The Veggie Roll may not have been as thrilling as the other dishes, but it was still thoughtfully crafted, well-portioned, and presented with care. Overall, we were impressed by the careful attention to detail and the balance of flavor in every dish.

For dessert, we tried the Fried Cheesecake—something we hadn’t had before, but it definitely lived up to expectations. The rich, crispy slice of cheesecake, alongside fresh blueberries and a Maraschino cherry atop a dollop of whipped cream, and drizzled with a sweet fruit compote. It was a decadent, indulgent way to cap off what we could almost call a perfect dining experience.

Additional Considerations

Dietary Accommodations: We were a bit disappointed by the limited vegetarian and vegan options at Oba. With just one vegetarian roll on the menu and no tofu in sight, plant-based diners might feel a little left out. Hopefully, as they refine their menu, they’ll consider expanding these options to accommodate a wider range of guests.

Parking: As with any downtown spot, parking is limited, though nearby ground-level metered lots (free after 6pm) make it manageable with a short walk.

Final Thoughts

Oba Sushi stands out in Erie, offering a unique haven for sushi lovers, and we really appreciate that. While menu-creep can be a concern, expanding the vegetarian options and adding a few specialty drinks (perhaps even a liquor license) could elevate it to an exclusive, must-visit dining spot. With those adjustments, Oba has the potential to become something truly special.

We went this weekend as well. 100% agree on the taste & presentation; our meals looked great and tasted amazing. I had the Maguro Katsu & my wife had the California Roll. My miso soup was lacking in the temperature department, as well, though. I guess that was intentional, rather than an accident. Regardless, I’ll definitely be making a return trip!
